Reykjavictim - electro-rock from China

Reykjavictim

The swhirling electronics wrap the audience in a gossamer weave as Reykjavictim deliver fusions of ’80s synth-wave and guitar progressions with vocals in both Chinese and English.

The softly spoken material pulses out of the speakers in waves of sounds that take over the brain with the synapses settling in rhythm with the resulting compositions. Languages switches mid-verse lend the pieces even more intrigue as the lyrics are delivered as almost metronomic chants.

Providing both live and recorded material Reykjavictim is establishing a foothold in the local scene after relocating eighteen months ago. This is music to play when you are wanting to wind-down and it fits the bill suitably for the moment. Whilst by the very nature of the largesse of the loops and electronics there is sense of deja-vu there is also variation within pieces to facilitate a continuum of progression.

It will be interesting to see if local cultural references infuse themselves further into the resulting out-put over the coming year and I look forward to hearing more in due course, for now I am going to put my feet up and bathe in the treatment.

Slack Armada

Slack Armada is the Chicago, USA, ambient electronica creator Jim Hrabak.

Slack Armada - ambient electronica from the USA

Slack Armada

Dreamy synthesis combines with guitars that waft in and out of the soundscape giving the ambient sounds something of an experimental shoegaze feel. Hitting play gives the listener a sense that they are donning a cashmere coat as the gently flowing sounds softly emerge from the speakers lazily drawing across the room before delicately washing over the ears.

The loops which frame the tracks are intriguingly, fairly short stems, which allows the languid harmonies to seem further extended, giving the resulting output a constant motion akin to the sea lapping at the shore-line. Whilst the core sounds of individual compositions are repetitious, there are sufficient transitions and reinterpretations to keep the material dynamic and by coming back to tracks further inferences are identified.

The eponymous début four track EP by Slack Armada, which came out in October, has the feeling of a two part storyline, with the opening sequences very much electronics drive, whilst the second half opening with a more guitar focussed sound and concluding with a more evenly balanced combination of the two, including a rephrased section from Evita, or is that just my ears?  Hrabak has some interesting ideas running through his head and it will be good to hear more in due course.

Kramies

Kramies based in Colorado in the USA is an Avant-garde solo performer Kramies Windt.

Kramies - singular music from The USA

Kramies

Combining electronics and instrumental Kramies delivers a sound which washes over the ears like suds of soap. Somewhat experimental, the sounds are delivered within the edges of the envelope and traverse a path of connected points, allowing the listener to settle back and enjoy.

The fusion of synthesised sounds and acoustic guitar enables Kramies to deliver an out-put which has the listener holding on to the entrails to be buffeted in a combination of the cognizable and the futuristic. Whilst that may sound as-though it may be a self-indulgence the material offers more than self adulation as the ears are captivated by the constructs which offer familiarity and newness.

There is a reason why you read the website and it isn’t because I find the mainstream bands of tomorrow, rather ponder the musicians you may not otherwise hear. I thank you for allowing me to indulge your ears with music of the underground which adds a scintilla to the day and Kramies suit the brief like a well fitting glove. Ever to be obscure, but the world is a better place for it.

Harry Gump

Harry Gump from Rottenburg an der Laaber (you just knew that had to be in Germany) is Harry plus players as and when needed for live and recorded performance – an alt-folk songwriter.

Harry Gump - alt-folk from Germany

Harry Gump

There is so much to enjoy here with Harry Gump – I am not sure where to start….

The frayed jeans – growling vocals sprawl across the room. The smart shoes – a clear and well structured out-put. The T-Shirt – an edge of friction. The well tailored jacket – the intellect. In summation, unhappy perspectives of the world around, set to a smart compositions.

Perchance, I was drawn to look out of the window to spot a flock of Seagulls (not the band) arguing with a murder of crows over a feeding spot, whilst both considerate of Red Kites who have recently be reintroduced into the area and I found myself listening to a sound-track that fitted the moment.

Whilst Harry has an excellent grasp of English, I do believe the vocals would be enhanced by being written in native German, where the juices could flow more naturally, though I do understand why the delivery is in English. I do hope that Harry Gump decide to revert to the home language and at that point, we may well find iconic ’60s pioneers of agit-folk would have a run for their money.

Go Exploring

Go Exploring is the alt-edm solo act of  Matthew Scime originally from Buffalo in the USA.

Go Exploring alt-edm from the USA

Go Exploring

Taking the name Go Exploring to heart Matthew is something of an itinerant traveller and can currently be found in Bangkok, Thailand.

Combining influences from the Far East with standard fare EDM and dropping in some psychedelic twists, turns the out-put into a relaxing space in which to flake out for a while.  Not that Go Exploring has been resting with the music, having released five EPs /LPs over the past year.

Very much an indie influenced artist originally the sounds mix in instruments and vocals with the electronics to afford the listener music that doesn’t have a generic feel to it. Despite the number of tracks on the prodigious release schedule there is considerable variation to the out-put which makes a lengthy run through an experience of changing shapes which, whilst ever calming, do contain surprises along the way.

I have spent more time looking out of the window into the dark than typing as the sounds of Go Exploring wash over my ears such is the nature of the music, which lets the mind wander, whilst remaining ever aware of the presence of the music.
