The Ians – Gold Teeth – Single Review

The trio of Nic (Vocals / Guitar), Matt (Bass / Vocals) and Sean (Drums) who form the garage band The Ians, based in Melbourne (Australia), released the single Gold Teeth on the 26th.

The Ians

The Ians

If there were a handbook on how to define less is more Gold Teeth would be the primary entry with its laid bare stomping energy thumping through the speakers.

Two minutes and fifty six seconds of sublime rock’n’roll from which everything extraneous has been stripped. The listener finds themselves with a pumping heart, punching the air while leaping around the room in sweat covered delight, I am just off to play that again… .

Image Society

Tightly woven guitars wrap themselves around a percussion that storms its way around the room. Image Society deliver an out-put that has a fresh zing to it, easy to listen to but, not fallen over into the pit of radio friendly wallpaper music. The quartet use dampers to keep the notes brief and this enables them to give the sense of spaciousness inside the frenetic levels of activity that plays through each track, leaving the audience with plenty of time to follow the complete context of the pieces.

Somewhat jazz funk derived Image Society sharpen everything up, to deliver a sound that pushes forward with urgency, giving the music a surprising twist of intrigue.

A band that is well worth spending some time to explore as on greater familiarity the rich textures become more apparent and the whole perception develops to realise the Image Society is a quartet with considerable technical and compositional skill.

I wish Image Society continued success with their music.

The Great Sabatini

Pin back your ears and be prepared for a nerve jangling experience with The Great Sabatini. Don’t be fooled by the seeming rawness of it all, as the quartet are in-fact highly expressive and experienced musicians who prefer to avoid the accoutrements of grandeur, giving the resulting out-put a blurry quality to which the listener can immediately relate.

Whilst the music has an apparent simplicity to the ears, there is much going on within the performance and it the ease with which The Great Sabatini is able to express complexity, simply, that raises the bar and makes them a band I recommend spending some time getting to know.

Currently winding down what has been an extensive North American tour the band also find some time to get into the studio and their third LP – the ten track – Dog Years – has recently appeared on bandcamp. Well worth adding to the collection.
