Drayter - rock from the USA

Drayter

A rollicking good time is had by the listener on hitting play as Drayter combine the best of British and American rock to deliver loud guitar, soaring vocal and defined percussion. There is immediately accessibility to the music, that has undergone something of a brush down before emerging out of the speakers, which on this occasion doesn’t grate as the quartet immerse themselves in delivering comprehensible compositions, whilst not loosing the verve of reality.

Allowing themselves plenty of time to explore the chords, which have the sound of being in a hurry, though are in reality gently spaced is a testament to their ability as well versed musicians who are able to paint illusions and a testament to the creative thoughts that flow around Drayter.

Whilst the quartet do play with radio frequency recordings, they are equally able to deliver gruffer noises whilst maintaining their composure.

Formed in 2009 there is little reason Drayter shouldn’t see greater visibility other than perhaps their scarcity of live appearances, seemingly having nothing booked for January, few gigs played in December and very few releases, perhaps they are up to something in the Studio? More please, more often.

Like rolling waves, swooping guitars, tumble into the room sweeping up the listener in sounds which are difficult to accept only emanate from three players. There are complex interwoven layers of music that The Vitals extend to the ears in an unhurried manner, allowing the brain to ingest the big statements which despite their power are tender and textured.

Having gained a few years experience The Vitals have a confidence in their compositions, which is reflected in the songs, that are unforced enabling the audience to relax in the experience. Whilst wrested from rock ‘n’ roll the trio add layers to the sound which provide emotional context and something of a psychedelic feel without becoming trippy. If you are in the mood for some well developed mellow rock there are few bands who will have more to offer.

I believe they are currently working on some new material for another LP and if the music on this new release is in away related to their established material it will be an album worth adding to the collection.

With flailing guitars Fake Club make their entrance through the speakers as a statement of intent which is followed up by some roaring tunes. Although only relatively newly on the scene their directness is greatly appreciated by their rapidly expanding fan-base. It was just over a year ago that I was first contacted about the band, sadly at that stage there wasn’t enough music for a full review so they were introduced by video, so it is with some pleasure I am able to get round to a full review.

It is always difficult to identify exactly what makes one band sound so much stronger than another and for each person that is different and in the main a purely subjective decision, for me it is a certain rawness giving me a sense of sincerity and Fake Club revel in raw power, so how could I not be smitten. Sure they can take it back to a more melodic construct, though even here there is a rough scrub to the sound. Their self belief and confidence enables the quintet to attack the music with passion and that is precisely what is needed to function effectively as an edgy rock band.

After listening to a number of tracks I find myself surrounded by a phalanx of of percussion, vocal and guitars and that is a flanking movement in which I am happy to spend much time. I look forward to hearing much more of Fake Club.

Superfecta

Superfecta – EP artwork

Well delivered spacey guitar riffs encase the classical big stage rock sounds that define Superfecta. They are also able to let the audience get out the air guitars to join in with faster anthemic rock numbers.

A couple of years behind them, the quartet have developed in to fine musicians and there is nothing to criticise about the studied output yet, as you know, it is the very fact of that flawless radio friendly delivery that I struggle to find a heart and soul which seems to have been ironed out along with all the other creases, but as always, that is just me and shouldn’t put you off as Superfecta have worked hard to get their songs sounding as they do.

They chose to spend a year focussing on rehearsal and live performance before hitting the studio this year to produce their debut EP – the eponymous four track release which came out yesterday. Even the artwork sets the tone of the considered nature of the band as this is part of a storyline as yet undisclosed.

I have much time for these guys and raise my hat to their hard work but – too ‘perfect’ or just Superfecta? Time will tell and I will leave you to be the judge.

Ajenda gives a mellowed twist to Rock ‘n’ Roll with deftly played melodies that are allowed to swirl around the room like smoke before settling on the ears and underlying it is a well formulated framework which gives the music plenty of oomph.

A well defined vocal neatly balances the tracks giving the band a defined and distinctive sound as influences from Eastern European folk are interspersed in the music. There is a certain fascination to be had by listening to Ajenda. It is perhaps the fact that I am writing this on a Monday morning that it seems a little restful to my head. Come the end of the day I have little doubt this would slide down well with a relaxing drink.

With a debut LP – Unrecognizable – set for release on the 28th September and supporting tours away from Northern Ireland, I would expect the band to gain greater traction than has been so far achieved as the ten track release, which I have had the opportunity to hear, contains a well crafted set of songs that do justice to the band.
