Siren Call

Siren Call from Vienna in Austria is the rock trio of Yvonne Lace (Vocals / Bass), Jason de Cordoba (Guitar / Vocals) and Szabó Gábor (Drums).

Siren Call - rock from Vienna

Siren Call

Rock, when delivered well, is a place of pure exuberance and extrovert guitars and Siren Call deliver on all counts. With sounds that transcend all geographic borders the trio have enough tatters to the edges to remain connected with the audience, with expansive compositions that fill the room.

The grunt and gruff are a delight as the band produces music which has the ability to shine across large venues. The guitar is given room, where appropriate to blossom, whilst a percussion / bass combination hold a reign on the wanderings and a perfectly suited vocal captivates the attention. Although well established as an international touring act, Siren Call have developed much of their following through live performance, which is great. For those of us not in the local environs, they have made little available and I hope they will get round to balancing this anomaly as they have much to offer, if only we could hear it.

BLOWSIGHT

BLOWSIGHT based in Stockholm, Sweden, is the rock band of Nick Red ( Lead vocals / Guitar), Seb (Guitar / Vocals), Mao (Bass / Vocals) and Fabz (Drums / Vocals).

BLOWSIGHT - rock from Sweden

BLOWSIGHT

Driving rock beats across the room as BLOWSIGHT deliver something with a difference. The chorus of vocals give the band a more considered approach than would be anticipated. This is accompanied by intricate guitar interplay which allows the band to provide music that whilst polished, isn’t so buffered as to stray into middle of the road mellow rock, as they equally know how and where to dirty it all up a bit.

It is their ability to blur the borders of ‘respectability’ with those of stained leather jackets, that has enabled BLOWSIGHT to be well received across many countries. The quartet compose songs which range from the theatric, where large stages would be the ideal live presentation, to more intimate venues with tightly woven harrying pieces. Despite this variety, there is a discernible thread of sound which keeps the listener engaged with the out-put.

The Tarsiers

The Tarsiers from Birmingham is the the rock band of DudzIan and Ryan.

The Tarsiers - rock from England

The Tarsiers

Retro glam-rock comes to mind on hitting play as The Tarsiers deliver big open spaces of rock which flow around the room in soaring compositions which don’t try to be anything other than what they are, good old fashioned fun-times. Whilst stylistically the music resonates of the past and any number of lists of ‘reminds me of’ could be written, the songs themselves are of today and it this is ability to combine the past with present that gives the trio an interesting out-put.

The Tarsiers produce pieces that convince the ears there must be more than three people involved, as although there is much activity by the individual players, they are able to deliver the tracks both with power and control.

Whilst the music translates well to recorded out-put, in fact there is a five track EP on it’s way, this is music best enjoyed with a crowd of other people at the front of the stage.

The MANICS provide high energy driven music that reminds of early ’80s new wave. Progressing rapidly the tracks have sharp clarity stripped of the fat, leaving the audience bouncing in time with the beats. A few years behind them, the trio have honed their live performance and recordings to tight and well balanced sounds which, despite their frenetic nature, are played with easy confidence and plenty of space.

It is the very bareness of the strings, which are wound tightly that leads me to enjoy the music as much as I do and this accompanied by a drum-kit that you can just imagine charging around the room leaves the audience happy with life. The MANICS demonstrate that music which doesn’t have complicated layers, to flower it up, can completely absorb the listener.

This is a band to add to the essential music playlist and I hope they have many years ahead of them.

Morning Fuzz

Morning Fuzz from New York in the USA is the rock quartet of Frank (Vocals / Guitar), Chris (Bass / Vocals), Michael (Guitar / Vocals) and Jesse (Drums).

Morning Fuzz - rock from The USA

Morning Fuzz

As evidence that there is no need to play around with a tried and tested formula of four people plus instruments and drum-kit and you have the foundations of rock band – Morning Fuzz  – are an example. Not seeking to change the world, rather add to it, the quartet deliver solid rock more than competently.

It is the infinitesimal nature of a combination of between ten and sixteen strings betwixt them that makes reviewing emerging rock bands such a pleasure.  In theory it should have all been heard before, but it never has and Morning Fuzz add a delicious temperament to the genre without ever trying to break the mould.

An interesting band, who it will be of more than cursory intent to follow as they have a sound which has the potential to easily accommodate big stage stadium performance, whether they ever have the opportunity, time alone will tell. Intriguingly, they equally have a style which suits the more intimate venues and well worth getting out to see playing live I would posit.

Whilst transposing smartly to recorded material, Morning Fuzz is almost certainly at their best in live performance, where the inter-play would be far stronger (I imagine) and perhaps why all the best rock bands get round to live recording of their LPs, as studio recordings almost inevitably dilute the real feel of the out-put. That said, as they are only playing in the USA and I am based in the UK, I am nonetheless grateful for the Studio releases I can get hold of. I would council they release a live LP to really showcase the sound.
