The US alt-rock outfit quAlia release the LP Aside on the 29th.
Steeped heavily in jazz and roots americana quAlia deliver music which has both experimental and classic elements to it allowing quAlia to entice the listener with an ever changing soundscape ensuring that the bakers dozen track, almost three quarters of an hour, LP keeps the audience ever on their toes.
My pick of the release being the eighth song – Reckless – a whisky-soaked ragtime-blues number which finds the body shimmying alongside.
For the second time in the recent past this is a band sharing name with another previously featured – which in the normal turn of events occurs only very rarely – so not to be confused with the indie-dance outfit Qualia, who last appeared back in 2015, also from the USA.
The Australian / Chilean dark-electronica duo Unknown Land are to release the EP Redline on the 25th.
In parallel with the reality of two musicians who live thousands of miles apart, communicating through the internet their music too has an spacious quality. The soundtrack mixes instrumentation and electronics delivering hypnotic dreamy soundscapes through which the mesmerising vocal slips in and out of focus.
The output, whilst having a dark layering running through it, also has a captivating beauty in which the listener becomes spell-bound.
From the forthcoming EP (available on bandcamp) – Qualia.
Like rolling waves, swooping guitars, tumble into the room sweeping up the listener in sounds which are difficult to accept only emanate from three players. There are complex interwoven layers of music that The Vitals extend to the ears in an unhurried manner, allowing the brain to ingest the big statements which despite their power are tender and textured.
Having gained a few years experience The Vitals have a confidence in their compositions, which is reflected in the songs, that are unforced enabling the audience to relax in the experience. Whilst wrested from rock ‘n’ roll the trio add layers to the sound which provide emotional context and something of a psychedelic feel without becoming trippy. If you are in the mood for some well developed mellow rock there are few bands who will have more to offer.
I believe they are currently working on some new material for another LP and if the music on this new release is in away related to their established material it will be an album worth adding to the collection.
