The John Steel Singers

The John Steel Singers provide a mesmerising journey through garage rock laden psychedelia as the multitude of vocals and instruments combine like soft waves foaming on the beach. The quintet are inveterate live performers with appearances across much of Europe in addition to their home country, with recordings appearing sparingly.

The falsetto voices are a trademark of The John Steel Singers and this enhances the music with its mushroom tea effect as the vocals slide between players in hushed tones, add to this the fuzzy instrumentation and the listener can’t do much other than sit entranced and nod in unison. The tracks are played to extended notes, which gives the music the surfy sounds of lo-fi garage rock.

The John Steel Singers is certainly well worth venturing out to see if their journey takes them near you, failing that a copy of the forthcoming eighteen track LP Everything’s a Thread (which is available on iTunes*).

Animali

Animali from Lyon in France is the psychedelic quintet of Julien Jussey (Vocals / Keys), Benjamin Rishardier (Guitar), Sylvian Hernandez (Guitar), Hadriend Santos Dasilva (Drums) and Nicolas Mieral (Bass).

Animali - Psychedelia from France

Animali

Weaving across the room like an ’80s space-invaders arcade game the music is enhanced by the addition of the electronic keyboard which gives it a granular texture. Intriguingly Animali from time to time introduce acoustic guitar to the mix and this lifts the sounds to a new dimension entirely.

The washes of sounds have the warming touch of the days when televisions had valves to warm up before a grainy black and white image appeared, this is retro without being of irrelevance to the here and now as Animali explore the largesse of psychedelia without ever becoming self-indulgent. The quintet is equally able to hurry up the tempo with energetic bounding refrains, which remind of the dreams many have of being able to fly, vast distances covered, extending in a leap that exceeds the boundaries of physics.

Formed in 2013, Animali are keeping extremely busy on the live circuit, where they are by all accounts being well received, in addition a début four track plus one remix EP – The Spark, and Three Other Poorly-Produced Pieces of Music – EP appeared in March (which is available on iTunes*).

Great Ytene

Great Ytene based in London – England is the psychedelic rock quartet of Leon, Lewis, Jorge and Tom.

Great Ytene - Psychedelia from England

Great Ytene

The heavily echoed music reverberates from wall to wall on playing Great Ytene, whose name partly derives from the younger years of the players from their time in Hampshire and life in the New Forest.

Reminiscent of the ancient woodland, as was, the music rustles behind a screen of obscuration. That isn’t to presuppose that this is music out of its time as the quartet have a currency which flows around the ears, more akin to tripping on Druids High than Mescaline. The extended notes float mesmerically through the brain taking over the thought processing of the cerebrum, leaving the listener in a stupefaction in which to lay and allow Great Ytene to guide the journey.

The gentle pillows of sound invest a relaxing somnambulance in which the audience can settle knowing they are in for an extravagant, yet unpretentious, exploration inside the mind. The flowing guitars are matched with subsumed vocals, percussion and instrumentation to deliver as many hours of soak as the listener wishes to procure as, even on loop, each individual track has much new to find each time round.

Irmandade Eletrorgânica

Irmandade Eletrorgânica from Bauru in Brazil is the psychedelic quintet of Nicholas Bamonte, João Pedro Bamonte, Daniel Yamada, Adauto Filhoand and Guilherme Vazzoler.

Irmandade Eletrorgânica - psychedelia from Brazil

Irmandade Eletrorgânica

Whilst drifting in and out of themes and range Irmandade Eletrorgânica proffer material that captures the ears for its very diversification of influence, which they deliver to the audience in the rawest form. For the very lack of contrivance the listener can’t help but be drawn into the eviscerating conundrum as the quintet lay down a sound-track to their lives.

Themes are allowed to ebb and flow through tracks, giving it a discordance that can only captivate as the mind is left to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle. Irmandade Eletrorgânica  do not seek to be anything other than who they are as they draw the listener to the parameters of surrealism.

If you enjoy your music in its barest form, as I do, then I would posit that Irmandade Eletrorgânica  is a band with whom you will engage, if you prefer fully completed pieces of work, then you will need to shift from the recliner to the desk to get the full value of a group of musicians who are prepared to hang themselves out to dry. For this I give them full credit and I commend the quintet for taking the time to expostulate the world as they see it.

The Greeting Committee

Greeting Committee from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in England is the psychedelic quintet of Sean Hanson, Jon CorbettJohn Cardill, John Duggan and Woodtits.

The Greeting Committee - Psychedelia from England

The Greeting Committee

It was only last month that I first came across The Greeting Committee through a video posted by End Of The Trail Records, however I did want to get a full review written as soon as possible.

The music imperceptibly wafts across the room as otiose guitar notes drift gently across the room, dreamily filling the head with kaleidoscopes of  colour. The band combine references to a version of slow-motion Brit-pop and ’70s psychotropics to provide the listener with an intriguing third eye of sound that melts inside the ears.

The unhurried delivery enables the audience plenty of time to saviour the individual components of the tracks, without it ever becoming funereal as inside the seeming torpor The Greeting Committee are busy delivering layers of texture and activity. Their relaxing stance makes for a comfortable space in which to lay as a haven to the freneticism of much of the current music around.

With four years experience behind them, The Greeting Committee deserve a far broader audience than thus far achieved, which is perhaps due on the main to their scarcity of releases.
