Pretty City

Pretty City is the psychedelic trio of Hugh Matthews, John-Luis Moretti and Drew Schapper from Melbourne in Australia.

Pretty City - Psychedelia from Australia

Pretty City

The best way to get to Pretty City is to take a forage in the gardens of Buckingham Palace in London, England, the home of Mrs. Mountbatten, better known globally as Queen Elizabeth II, where you will find Magic Mushrooms. Shut the curtains, don a tie-dyed kaftan turn on slowly rotating globes and lay back to enjoy.

The audience is left in a calmly evolving cascade of colours as the trio extend to the ears an intriguing conundrum of songs which typically last less than three minutes, yet seem to take the mind on a journey lasting an hour or two of intrigue as Pretty City introduce sliding veils of texture in which the brain can relax and stretch time. It is no mean feat to invest in a short track sufficient layering that it sounds as though it runs far longer, yet remain unhurried in delivery. These guys are smart cookies at composing and delivering their material.

Second Hand Clothes only last 02:46, if you don’t find time bending you are reading the wrong website.

Spires

Spires, from Brooklyn in the USA is the psychedelic-garage quartet of Matt StevensonJack CollinsMichael Goodman and Carter McNeil.

Spires - psychedelic-garage from the USA

Spires

Combining elements of ’60s psychedelia with garage rock Spires is able to condense the sound to deliver music that is immediately in furrow. Without loosing the untraceable fluid echoes of psychotropia, the quartet is also able to iron out the extraneous, providing the audience with slices of creativity that not only float off into eddies of disappearing tendrils, but also have a sense of direction.

Spires allow themselves enough time and spacing to permit the compositions to curl around the listener, wrapping them in silky textures, whilst affording those of more tempestuous nature to find plenty of angles and diversions to keep them entertained.

Three years into the journey Spires have been halted by various line-up changes, that has found stuttering progression. One can only hope that the current line-up gives the creative juices sufficient stability to gain traction. Given a wider spread of geographic performance arenas, this seems to be a distinct possibility, time will tell.

I look forward to following the progress of the quartet as imaginatively there is much to add to the world of music.

Napolleon

From Bandung in Indonesia surface Bayu Andrianto (Guitar / Vocal), Valery Marsiano (Guitar), Aditya Tri Hanggono (Bass) and Muhammad Zainul Ilyas (Drums) who form the psychedelic Napolleon.

Napolleon - psychedelia from Indonesia

Napolleon

Heavy weaves of psychotropic substance descend around the ears as Napolleon combine ’60s rock with drone to layer the listener with darkly wefted sounds. The mind finds itself drifting along with the compositions as they meander around the room.

Reminders of concentrated Hawkwind pour out of the speakers as the instruments interplay to a submerged echoing vocal that enhances the out-of focus lens of the out-put. Napolleon is able to bring the disparate concepts together in a way that leaves the listener aware only of a continuum of sound. Their ability to coalesce the ranging ideas finds the audience mesmerically entranced and time looses all relevance as the quartet cloak the consciousness in an oppressive soundtrack that has the ability to simultaneously extend an arm of comfort.

A few years behind them, it was only on the 10th that they have released their début eponymous EP. Although only four tracks long, it will be no surprise to learn that the release extends to nearly twenty five minutes. Do find some time to dwell with Napolleon who add immensely to the pleasure of the day.

Colaba Point

Colaba Point is the ambient-psychedelic quartet of Rukmini Roy, Ankur Chugh, Abhishek Denzil and Rohan Kadam from Mumbai in India.

Colaba Point - ambient psychedelia from India

Colaba Point

Combining electronics with a range of instruments both modern and traditional Colaba Point take the listener on a gently rolling journey of sound. The band deliver measured paces of enrapturing compositions which subtly contain references to times of yore, that give the pieces a timeless elegance, whilst simultaneously using the latest technologies to expand the older themes and this enables them to develop tracks through slowly shifting sands of time.

The vocal, which sits aloof of the music, gives the audience a sense of sound-track commentary, adding a spacious feel to the tracks. This is not music in which to engage whilst chasing shots, rather to imbibe with a long drink to hand. Formed back in 2011 Colaba Point have established a live presence and a steady flow of recorded material has enables their wide ranging out-put to travel further afield.

Not an out-fit that seeks to travel anywhere near the mainstream, Colaba Point have created a distinctive style, that should be more widely heard as they add much to the weave of the world of music and it is pleasure to introduce them to you.

Shapes Freely

Shapes Freely from Nevada City, California in the USA is a psychedelic rock outfit centred around Brook Caballero with Ben Milner and Jessica Henry forming the core elements with the addition of numerous musicians.

Shapes Freely - Psychedelic rock from the USA

Shapes Freely

I am writing this on Friday the 12th, which noted in UK news this morning that Mrs. P. Mountbatten – more formally known as Queen Elizabeth II – has magic mushrooms growing in her back-garden, so it is perhaps appropriate that many of the articles I have written today have an hallucinogenic feel to them – Shapes Freely being no exception.

Weaving their way across the room in a kaleidoscopic array of billowing cloud Shapes Freely articulate a graceful progression of multifarious conceptual tints and hues. The diversity of instrumentation does not over-power the gently flowing sounds, rather, adds perspicuity to the tumefied soundscape as it rolls around the ears.

The expansive and expressive nature of the pieces does not get in the way of listenability and the audience is left in a space of calming reflectivity.

Allow yourself plenty of time to let the music unwrap as you will find it is time that passes without an eye on the clock.
