Chalk and Numbers
The mind can’t help but wander back to the swinging ’60s as Chalk And Numbers resurrect simplicity and clarity to deliver a sound that is a joy to listen to.
There is nothing to confuse the listener here, as the music does exactly what it says on the tin – easy to engage and wallow in nostalgia. Yet somehow they do it with a freshness and don’t sound like a parody, as the material is finely tweaked to resonate with the ’10s of the 21st Century.
It is when I get to hear bands who are able to deliver top notch listening in such simple format that, although I don’t get them (The Beatles) their music remains ever present. However unlike the aforementioned, with Chalk And Numbers I very much find an engagement.
The finely structured compositions are greatly enhanced by instrumentation that gives a warmth to the tracks and the vocal delivery adds the finishing touches. Their ability to deliver this warmth is very much due, in my opinion, to the use of analogue recordings, which digital can never recapture and the fact that Chalk And Numbers take the time to actually use the recording techniques of their inspiration gives this the depth that a digital recording can never reproduce, regardless of the production and mastering loaded post recording.
I ponder whether they use 4, 8 or 16 track recordings, but that is me just being pedantic. I must ask them.
