Making a welcome return to the site after a two year absence in Mirror, I’m Not A Band, are discovered in a richer tapestry of sound than when last featured, though of similar singular disposition enabling them to create a space of their own in a crowded market-sector and the listener who enjoys nature finds themselves enticed by the expressive keys as those who enjoy stemmed loops and are tempted by the gloss of electronic-overdub whilst alienating neither approaches to music as the natural spaces of absorbing vocals and keyboard are given the room to breath and work their spell as are the vocoder and gadgets.
The German alt-electro duo, I’m Not A Band, released the single EASY on the 23rd.
I’m Not A Band
EASY is a track of distinctive contrasts. Commencing with unfiltered electro-beat drawn straight out of the template, to become a luscious blend of electro-balkan-folk as strings join with the metronome, then to fold into an EDM club track prior to weaving it all together, before ending as abruptly as it begins and overlaying it all is a narrative vocal, which spreads itself evenly through the evolving sounds.
I’m Not A Band have been able to take a straightforward loop and invest it with luxuriant variety leaving the listener want to wrap themselves up in the sound of EASY.
The single has been released with two versions of EASY, a radio edit that knocks a minute and a bit off the track and this, the original version which runs to just over five minutes.
I’m Not A Band from Berlin in Germany is the alt-electro duo of Stephan (violin / Synths / Vocals)and Mony (Vocals / Flute).
I’m Not A Band
With their judicious use of violin compositions and a haunting flute to add whisps of flavours to to the dance beats I’m Not A Band is able to provide the audience with both physical and mental stimulation. Luscious textures of sound float around the room and the only thing to do is close the eyes and wallow in the music.
This is material to allow the brain to meander with, whilst the body gently sways like a willow in the breeze. The combinations of classical violin combining with electro-loops gives the listener much to enjoy and frequent references to Turkish Folk add a decadence to the music that enraptures the ears. For maximum value all that is needed are pulsating strobe lights to flicker across the eyelids and many hours to spare.
I’m Not A Band is able to deliver sounds which although infused with difference, are meltingly simple to engage with and ask nothing more of the ears than for them to be open.
