An intriguing blend of Spanish Folk and US Southern-blues merge together in the out-put of  Forest & Dove leaving the audience simultaneously tapping feet in unison and nodding head in sagacity. The trio don’t seek to darken the mood of the moment as they allow the blousy blues to flight-footedly scamper around the room.

Acoustic guitar, sometimes even a Spanish Guitar and electric lead, which fleetingly makes me wonder how this works in live performance, is matted with stentorian bass giving the tracks their solid spine, as the drum-kit splices between the softly spoken and the expressive, the additional percussion used in recorded tracks adds a depth of field to the aural range. Vocal stretches from supporting act to conductor which again allows the trio to extend their range.

The début, five track, EP by Forest & DovePleasure To Burn (available on bandcamp), which I have had the opportunity to listen to in full is being released on the 15th of January. Sadly I am unable to share with you more than one track, the opener – and in my view not the jewel of the five – though giving a fair idea of what to expect – Burning Blue.

I look forward to future harvest by Forest & Dove as they sow their seed of fertile creativity.

Los Bélmez an alt-rock quartet based in Palma de Mallorca on the Balearic Islands of Spain comprises of – Carlos (Bass / Keys), Ginés (Drums), Alberto (Guitar) and Johnny (Vocal).

Los Bélmez

Switching between acoustic and electric guitar allows Los Bélmez to inject their music widely, from garage rock fuzziness to psychedelia and the sparsely played keys are used to add a twist of the Wurlitzer where appropriate.

Formed a couple of years ago Los Bélmez write songs which reflect of the surrounding area with material seeking to describe traditions, superstitions and life in Spain from the perspective of those who don’t feel they fit into the mould. This gives the out-put something of an ethereal feel, to which the quartet are able to inject well defined structures that keep the tracks from evolving into lengthy dreamscapes.

Having established a live performance following a début LP Españoladas came out earlier this year and there are plans for a follow-up in the near future – Centinela de Occidente.

Los Bélmez have chosen a path which gives them clear space, whilst also not verging off to the obscure, allowing them the opportunity to find an audience across a wide berth of interest.

Deers from Madrid in Spain is the garage rock quartet of Ana Garcia Perrote, Carlotta CosialsAde Martin and Ámber Grimbergen.

Deers - garage rock from Spain

Slithering out of the speakers in a mesmeric flow Deers deliver sounds which hark of the modernistic, yet are steeped in a realism as the unfettered music breathes life into the room. The rawness of the delivery, gives the quartet an attraction for its very unfussiness and the listener is left with the feeling that the songs are being played for the first time – for them in person and it is this strong tie to the listener which gives the music a powerful presence.

Drawing on the life around in Spain, there is a Southern European feel of carefree abandonment unenslaved by the confines of chasing money for the sake of it and focussed on taking the joy from life, regardless of the surroundings and Deers have the ability to take that exuberance and cloak it with a music with the same sentience. The quartet have a natural ability, which needs no fandangling and is the better for its very earthiness.

Deers sum up the realisms of life and instead of opining about fiscal unfairness, turn their mind to the rich abounds of actually being alive and leave the listener also in positive frame and it of no surprise they have been able to take their perspectives of garage rock around wide swathes of Europe to much acclaim and a joy that their only release is a two track single called Demo.

The song to introduce their music is of course not on that release.

The Mccooleys

There is a shimmering sunshine that illuminates the room on hitting play as The Mccooleys resurrect British rock of the likes of The Kinks delivering it a swift boot into the 2010’s and although there is not much to hear at this stage, what there is, is a joy into which to wrap the ears.

The percussion acts as a carborundum to give the guitar a sharpened blade of incision which slices through the air as the bass is allowed to wallow in off-beat providing The Mccooleys with incredible space to afford the vocal to explore the thematics. The trio have built a loyal local live following and with some luck there are words of a new EP for us that don’t live locally to find more of their music – Empty blue skies!.

For those travelling to Mallorca over the summer – I do advise having a look at the local gig listings and if you find The Mccooleys playing, eschew the Clubs with the over-priced drinks and have a fun night out with real musicians.
