Aurganic - alt-electronica from Canada

Aurganic

This Monday as I am writing is for deep breathing exercises as for the second time, this is easy on the ear, as I am subsumed in the duck down ambience that is Aurganic. Whilst the music is restful on the brain that isn’t to suggest it is wallpaper paste as there is plenty of activity and creativity occurring to focus the thought processes. The combinations of voice, real instruments and synthetic sounds create pieces that have both an organic imprint and also an experimental edginess that works particularly well.

Having been around for a few years and known each other for even longer, the duo work well together, playing to each others abilities and generating something that is worth spending time with. Whilst predominately a duo, they also recognize that a third mind and set of fingers / vocal can add additional value and to their credit Aurganic are not afraid to add these dimensions where it makes sense and these interventions add a nice alteration in sound to the music.

Already with an LP behind them, the 2012 Life As a Canvas – Aurganic is available on iTunes*,  a new release, the twelve track Deviations which comes out on 24th September 2013, identifies that Aurganic is proving an effective recording outfit. I can’t say this will sit on my must have everyday playlist, but the new release, which I have had the opportunity to hear is a superbly crafted and genuine body of work, most certainly worth adding to music collection.

Inbellum - heavy metal from the USA

Inbellum

Tentaverunt me ad scribere totum review patria lingua Inbellum sicut et habent originem a paucis titulos quoque Latinum carmen, but I won’t as the powerhouse lies within the sounds scouring their way across the room, not in the Latin derivations.

Heavy Metal when played well can be a beautiful and calming space in which to lay and Inbellum take us to this space.  A plethora of influences sit within this Honduran, Columbian, American combination and the influences of Southern America are interspersed with trips to the Caribbean lifting the music to a level which totally absorbs the listener. La voz cambia entre el Español y el inglés puede ser un poco irritante para algunos but that is the real strength of the band as they combine so much in a short space of time.

Music which challenges preconceptions is always a pleasure to find and I am only sorry it has taken me me two months to get round to writing the review as I float around the room on a sublime melting pot of percussion, vocal and guitar work that can’t help but attract attention from anyone who enjoys bands who challenge the norm to come up with something truly original, but equally accessible.

Huunter

Despite the Scandinavian expectation by the spelling, Huunter, is a solo project by Luke Bourne from New York in The USA.

Huunter - alt rock from the USA

Huunter

For the second time in a few days I find myself writing a review of a band who is releasing material on a track by track basis, on this occasion Huunter is releasing a nine track release over nine months.

With the profundity of the underlying Bass it will come as no surprise that I find this magnetic. Huunter is able to layer in a range of instruments to create the atmosphere of the sounds which billow around the room, echoing like long lost ghosts shackled in the neither-world, with a vocal that suits the mood.

Lloyd draws the listener into the music with an intoxicating mix of vocal and instrumental combinations which weave threads around ears keeping them finely tuned to the experiences on offer. There is no doubt this is creativity and exposition of the highest order.

Sadly I feel this is potentially all we will ever hear of Huunter as it has taken two years to complete the tracks and another nine months to get to hear them all. I am not sure if it is insecurity or just pursuit of perfection that leads to this drawn out process. My preference would be for Lloyd Bourne to let go a little and allow us to hear more of the creativity more frequently as the plugged in versions are sublime to the ears and I am not convinced that the acoustic versions which accompany each release add much, if any, value but then I never have been a fan of the remix and you may feel differently.

Which ever way it turns out, my thoughts, catch the music by Huunter while you can.

Slim Wray

Slim Wray a Garage Rock band from New York in the USA centres around the duo of Howzr (Guitar / Vocals) and Chris Moran (Drums / Vocals).

Slim Wray - Garage Rock from the USA

Slim Wray

A scintillating scythe of percussion cleaves the air to announce the arrival of Slim Wray, this is rock as it should be played. Reflecting on relationships, the lyrics take the classic angsts of boy meets girl and delivers them inside a resounding maelstrom of well delivered riffs and rattles.

The energy palpably hammers against the walls and the tracks deliver everything you could want for an evening of rock and roll. Slim Wray also manage to deliver it without the sound distorting levels which takes much away from many new bands and the delightful fuzzed guitar work layers in all the nuances required to emit both the power and the glory of it all.

I wonder whether they will end up with a full time bass guitarist as without it the sounds would be too tinny, so it is good to find that all the material currently around does include that all important four stringed instrument – time will tell.

The tracks work superbly well as they don’t try to reinvent the wheel, rather concentrating on what they know and enjoy and Slim Wray ably define why working to a bands strengths and not attempting to stretch skills beyond the limits works so well, providing the ears with a delightful moment in time.

EdTang & The Chops

EdTang & The Chops is the rock band comprising EdTangNick BockBrad HarrisonGeoffrey Myers and Vic Fraternale from New Jersey in the USA.

EdTang & The Chops is a rock band from the USA

EdTang & The Chops

EdTang & The Chops has more than a hint of americana as pedal steel slides across the stage, but inside that, is a lively retake of Celtic Rock and the listener is drawn to The Pogues, so how could I not recommend you take a moment out of your day.

There is great pleasure in exploring the world of emerging bands and the quintet exemplify why this is the case. A laid-back soundtrack is complimented by a whisky soaked and cigarette smokers vocal, which gives the material a scintillating edge that captures the ears immediately on hitting play.

The folk derivatives ripple round the room as a diverse range of instruments are deployed to deliver engaging music. The whole soundscape resembles the what if –  The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl had created more music together – well it would have been EdTang & The Chops. That isn’t to say this is some pale pastiche, far from it, it is a pure delight and a band I would like to hear much more of in the future as they combine traditional sounds with inventiveness to provide the audience with something immensely fulfilling.

Classic storytelling combines with mood fitting compositions to generate music which not only captures the listener but gets them involved.
