Damn Terran - alt-indie from Australia

Damn Terran

A combination of  guitar screeches and groans subsumed within an architecture of fine brickwork and Damn Terran offer to the listener a mix of filtered sounds to throw out an interesting space in which to spend some considerable time. The trio are deft musicians though the material sits outside the media friendly radio play slot so sadly their zenith will never be the highpoint they deserve, other than to those with a more discerning taste in music discovery where they sit as a fine example of what can be done with minimalism.

I would envisage their live performances would see packed crowds having a great time as the energetic flashes rip through the audience and even on recording one is left just wanting to see Damn Terran live. The music stands up to scrutiny from any angle as they capably shift between tracks of under two minutes to over four, each track delivered with verve and passion that rattles around the room gathering up the listener in a sweating brow.

Once again Australasia turns up trumps with the slightly off centre and this continent is fast becoming one of my favoured hunting grounds for expressive and fresh creativity.

The Native Cats

From Hobart in Tasmania we find the alt-indie duo of Peter Escott (Vocals) and Julian Teakle (Bass) who together with their electronics make up The Native Cats.

The Native Cats - alt indie from Tasmania

The Native Cats

Firmly rooted like a solid oak tree in the lower registers The Native Cats captivate with their intriguing compositions. Two players who remind me of Joy Division and vocal a la Ian Curtis – how could it not be of interest? Snaking across the room, the music wends its way into the bones before it reaches the ears and the body is left in fluviolacustrine ebb and flow.

The floating sinews of sound coalesce into spectral shapes and the listener can’t help but become engaged. These are highly capable musicians who have been able to graft new wave with isotronics to deliver a sound that peps as it rehydrates the mind, as it leaks the soul in a meandering malaise of momentum. Or to put it another way, the ebb  flow of the music sucks in the audience.

I don’t often find myself in Tasmania, however when I do, there is some top notch music which encapsulates in a microcosm like a coral reef the brightest and most captivating there is to find in underground bands. It is perhaps the scarcity of these jewels that keeps many Island Nations as stunning places to explore.

Some may find it too much of a sound alike, but to my mind this is PIL and Joy Division wrapped up in one for the 21st Century and a real pleasure to add to the website.

The Audio Justice

The Audio Justice from Auckland in New Zealand is the indie rock out-fit of Grant Duncan (Bass / Lead Vocals), ‘JP’ Juan Pablo Valenzuela Garcia (Guitar /Backing Vocals) and Mike Harb (Drums / Backing Vocals).

The Audio Justice - indie rock from New Zealand

The Audio Justice

The Audio Justice began as a solo vehicle with guest players back in 2011. In late 2012 the band took on a more permanent shape and a different sound. The music has a slight retrospective tilt to it, though it doesn’t fall behind the times. Well honed musicianship is prevalent throughout the band and they play as a tight unit. Whilst not inaccessible, there is what I can only term a ‘grown-up’ sound to the melodies which have a somewhat progressive rock feel to them, more a band to listen  to with a chilled Chardonnay than an Icy Lager.

There are some interesting bands in New Zealand and evidently a hunger for live performance bands and I am certain they will find a natural local fan-base and on a broader international scale there is a sound that will travel well. Their new four track EP Just That should find The Audio Justice begin to gain some of that wider traction.

Staring At The Message is track two of the EP, and my pick of the release which it would be, quite naturally, with the Iggy Pop refrain.

The Nights

The Nights is an ambient electronica trio from Sydney in Australia comprising Rob CampbellThomas Marland and Walter Flamenco.

The Nights - ambient electronica from Australia

The Nights

There is always a pleasure in breaking the national stereotype and The Nights with their soft hand cream delivery certainly break the perception as their smooth flowing silken electronics slide across the room.

As though attempting to climb a slate cliff with a pick The Nights slough the notes into the room, each gently slipping against the edge of the other in a cascading layer of sound that tumbles around the ears gaining intensity and yet pacivity in equal measure. The listener is left in a gentle embrace of music which caresses the head on a soft pillow of music.

With deft sleights of hand the synthesisers and computers slip one betwixt the other in a continual flow of notes which calm and intrigue much like a wax lamp. The listener can feel their head slow down as the music continues to pour and before long there is a seemingly natural cohesion between the synthetic and the synapse as they beat in equal rhythm.

The Nights are appropriately named, as this is music to take the helter skelter of the day away to rest the mind and settle into a slumber of calmness.

Scenic

Scenic from Perth in Australia is the ambient electronic quartet of Adam, Eric, Doug and Nicholas.

Scenic - ambient electronic from Australia

Scenic

Scenic produce a sound which would make you think they sit squarely in the South West Coast America scene as the washes of watercolour sounds flow across the room. Generous loops of electronica are given room to explore the spaces whilst percussion and guitar define the shapes and hazed vocals blur the edges leaving the listener feeling as though they are in an immersion tank.

I really should have set this for publication on Saturday after a great Friday night out, but having spent some time having a listening to the unhurried and relaxed sounds I thought the weekend needed extending back to Thursday.

This is music which fits across much of the globe, to such an extent it was a French label – Tigersushi who gave them their first recording breaks. Now signed with the Australian label Future Classic they have recently released a five track EP – Shockwaves. Their music is gaining far broader recognition and with the Australian summer festival season just beginning to set up schedules and get into flow, I would expect to hear far more of Scenic over the coming year.
