The US ambient-bass project of Benjamin Ryan Williams – B.E.N or in long-form Bass Every Night released the LP My Girlfriend Ruined My Spotify Algorithm and Other Musical Poems on the 17th.
Don’t be fooled by the album title as B.E.N creates music which is purely instrumental bass, though stretching to poetic makes perfect sense as the roughly forty minutes, bakers dozen track, does have a poetic flow when encapsulated in one sitting, which is the best way to approach the release, which is more reminiscent of the movements of a symphony than a series of individual tracks.
You may have read ‘purely instrumental bass’, or possibly ‘ambient-bass’ as a genre definition and have fallen asleep thinking I must have finally lost the plot, how on earth does a bass guitar make for two thirds of an hour of music? Rest assured, as you will well know there is more to a bass guitar than four or five strings as is demonstrated in the synthesis of My Girlfriend Ruined My Spotify Algorithm and Other Musical Poems. Those of longer stay with the site will realise I always enjoy bass guitar and it is with some delight that I have been able to feature a musician who extrapolates the instrument to its more tender moments too.
The ninth track is When We Were Younger And Hadn’t Figured Out Our Anti-Depressants.
