Late TV – Great Gulfs – Single Review

It was back in October 2017 that the jazz-funk sextet of Luke Novak, Matthew Halsall, Richard Bowman, Evesham Nicholas, Martin and Ryan SzanyiLate TV – based in London (England) – last featured. In February they will be releasing the single Great Gulfs.

Great Gulfs finds the band in mellowed mood in a track that winds gently though the room as though borne on fluffy pillows and initially invites the listener to step shoulder to shoulder with a partner, though as the song develops so the embrace becomes ever more tenderly close.

The retrospective melody of the track, which glides elegantly through the room, wraps the audience in a sense of warm, cushioned serenity towards the world around.

Ex Hex – Cosmic Cave – Audio

Consecutive features by bands from Washington D.C. (USA) is it something to antagonism about Trump in the White House I wonder? This time around the new-wave trio of Mary Timony, Laura Harris, Betsy Wright who form the band Ex Hex who will be releasing the LP It’s Real on the 22nd of March.

Other than suggesting to turn up the speakers and loose yourself in the retrospective warm brushes of the music, I merely add if the eighth track – Cosmic Cave – of the eleven on the LP (which is available on bandcamp) doesn’t have you swooning and join in with the invitation to ‘come on dance with me‘ then you are probably reading the wrong music review site.

Royal Trux – White Stuff – Audio

The Washington D.C. (USA) alt-rock duo of Jennifer Herrema and Neil Hagerty will be releasing the LP White Stuff on the 1st of March.

Initially formed in 1987, in 2001 they disappeared from the scene to reappear in 2016, with the eleven tracks of White Stuff (available on bandcamp) being the follow-up studio recording to the 2000 album Pound For Pound.

Merging, through the album, both gritty, grinding riffs of grumbling rock with sparkled hip-hop the duo are able to create an album which attests to more than capable seasoned musicians who are able to slough away the jaded armour of longevity to deliver songs that have the vibrancy and freshness of a band approaching the start of their career.

The opening track is the title and firmly rooted in early garage-rock – White Stuff.

The Hathaway Family Plot – Monetizing Fear – Audio

The US experimental-dystopia project The Hathaway Family Plot released the LP A Flat Thing yesterday.

The Hathaway Family Plot
The Hathaway Family Plot

An eleven track, roughly forty one minutes, album (available on bandcamp) which requires the listener to put away any preconceived thoughts of song construction prior to hitting play.

A stretch of disparate instrumentation crackles through the room – on occasion forming agitated clumps on others a flat-line of no-wave, yet always holding an attentive audience whilst inviting them to wander in to dark spaces in their mind, as the looming oppressive presence of the tracks trigger the synapses.

My pick of the release being the fourth composition – Monetizing Fear.

208L Containers – The Walnut King – Audio

The Tasmanian garage rock band 208L Containers released their début LP Knitted Family Helmet today.

208L Containers
208L Containers

A stomping seven track album (available on bandcamp) which crams a disparate range of points of conversations, some inane others of strident polemic, inside foundation shaking rumbles of compacted distortion.

The disengaged vocal sets the scene for the LP which neatly manages to mix both inconsequential noises of the mundanity of life with pointed rhetoric on issues of wide consequence as the reflective disquiet of the instrumentation thunders through the release.

My pick of Knitted Family Helmet being the closer – The Walnut King.
