Each track on Lake Tides / Almost So Close (which is available on bandcamp) illuminates different perspectives of Capital Soirée.

Lake Tides is a creamy flow of hazy melodic gazewave which settles quietly in to the room generating a sense of calmness as it places soft hands on nearby furrowed brows.

Almost So Close, which is my pick of the two, takes a deeper breath prior to flowing out of the speakers with the listener being transported to ’80s synthwave.

Charlie Says – Vena Cava – EP Review

The Welsh rock quartet Charlie Says released the EP Vena Cava on the 30th of June.

Charlie Says

Charlie Says

These are a highly talented group of musicians who during the course of the roughly eighteen minutes of the four songs are able to wrest a whole gamut of emotional reaction from the listener.

Opening with the pulverising title track – the room is transformed in to a heaving mass of frenetic head banging and wayward air guitar as the song hurtles past the dancing bodies.

Next is the heart-aching melody and vocal extravaganza of Heartshaped that finds the floor washed in tears and is my pick of the release.

The penultimate song Witches transforms the sound to a latino rumble that underpins a cinematic theme and the feeling of the intimacy of the vocal.

Sadly the end of Vena Cava is signalled by the opening bars of the closer No More Glory which fires in to a raw blues rock number that fizzes with energy – leaving those in earshot shouting for more and I do look forward to hearing more by Charlie Says in short order.

when its dark out – letting go is not a weakness – Audio

The Scottish alt-rock project when its dark out was introduced earlier in the year.

when its dark out - letting go is not a weakness

when its dark out

A new track surfaced yesterday which is of very different shading.

The eighty seven seconds of letting go is not a weakness are of a fuzzy guitar instrumental that spins around an axis that minds of the grinding wheels of a heavy freight train slowly gaining traction and velocity – an aural demonstration of Newton’s three laws of motion, if you will.

Aaron Avis – Thirteen – Audio

The US goth-rap creator Aaron Avis revealed the LP ZION on the 30th of June.

Aaron Avis

Aaron Avis

A nine track album of dystopian membrane that, like a wrecking ball, lays to waste all within its reach, leaving behind a trail of industrial destruction in a roughly thirty seven minutes of pulsing instrumentation, intense vocal and stern percussion.

Three of the songs will already be known to collectors of the music having appeared on the LP The Bootleg Compilation which was released in March – of the remaining six my pick of the release is the fourth track on the album – Thirteen.

Among Lynx – Time – Single Review

The Swedish roots-rockers Among Lynx revealed the song Time on the 29th of June.

Among Lynx

Among Lynx

Immediately on hitting play, the listener is transported to a sawdust strewn saloon bar whilst instinctively reaching for a whisky to spend time in the company of Among Lynx, as the new song feeds gnarly blues riffs though the room.

Whilst easy to focus on purely the slide guitar and immersive vocals, to do so would be to miss all that is included within Time which is, in reality, an intricate, superbly composed and delivered song with much going on beneath the surface, with harmonica and double-bass adding depth to the rhythm of percussion.

For reasons undeserved, though sadly the nature of the world of music, despite delivering music of the highest quality their fan-base, whilst intensely loyal, is predominately home-grown. If justice is served, 2018 will break open the floodgates for a band who should be on far more radars.
