Two thirds of the single has been revealed in advance, the most recent of which is Lonely.

Another one of those moments in which you need to have your speaker system straining to stay on their anchors as you bury your head between the casements and if you don’t emerge with ears bleeding on completion of the tad under five and a third minutes song you either didn’t turn up the volume to maximum or you have appalling speakers, which probably means you never actually hear any music at all, rather reeds of noise.

Remember Sports – Up From Below – Audio

The US garage-rock quartet Remember Sports will release the LP Slow Buzz on the 18th of May.

Remember Sports

Remember Sports

The dozen track album (available on bandcamp) is the long awaited follow up to the LP All Of Something which appeared in 2015 who were at the time, as longer stay readers will recall through the distinctive vocal, a quintet by the name of Sports.

Completion of education and the dispersal through the USA of the various players meant that things did not congeal until more recently when three of the original players, Catherine Dwyer (Bass) Carmen Perry (Vocal / Guitar) and Jack Washburn (Guitar), found themselves in Philadelphia and decided they had unfinished business.

Adding a new fourth player Connor Perry (Drums) (replacing the temporarily enlisted drummer Benji Dossetter – who wrote the music for the eighth track on the album – Temporary Tattoo) and recognising this was something new it was also something from the past with the new name paying homage to the roots of the sound.

Up From Below, the second song on the LP, is the first to be revealed.

The Avenue – You’ve Got A Grip On Me – Audio

The Avenue is an Australian indie-fuzz quartet.

An apology for getting to this a little late as I was first alerted to the five track EP Names (available on bandcamp) prior to its release on the 15th.

There is deft flow of hazy dual guitars which is combined with subtle electronica, centrifugal percussion and steadying bass, which in this release added to by Aimee Bridgman who adds in various spots Clarinet, Flute or Saxophone to add layered contextualisation to the songs set against a distinctly indie-pop vocal.

Rather than resulting in the potential disaster of spellbinding instrumentation colliding with abstract vocal the material works superbly with my pick of the release being the just over seven minutes closer – You’ve Got A Grip On Me – in which the voice is delivered through a vocoder in calmed synthesis.

Dave C. Rupert – Cold – Audio

The English mellow-rock project Dave C. Rupert is finalising details for the EP Cold.

Dave C. Rupert

The title track – Cold -, which was released as a standalone single on the 23rd, is highlighted by a strong vocal performance supported by an empathetic semi-acoustic melody which affords the composition its hypnotic layer of sound.

It comes as no surprise to learn that Dave is an Opera trained vocalist as the sustained inflections of notes, which gives the track its character, contextually reflects the balance of the song which is an apologia of a relationship drifted apart.

Whilst many introductions are made with classically trained musicians in the mix, I often find that those educated in opera and classical vocal delivery find the transition to other styles most difficult and it is a credit to Dave having been able to successfully make that shift.

Longer stay readers will also know that I am far more a fan of bass and baritone vocal over tenor, rarely remarking on the timbre of a tenor singer along with the fact that the genre definition of mellow-rock rarely features – therefore you will be able to ascertain that I do think there is something special here that adds to the weave of the world with the music of Dave C. Rupert.

Higher Education – Gift Called Life – Audio

The US alt-rock band Higher Education released the LP Gift Called Life on the 23rd.

Higher Education

Higher Education

The title track and second of the dozen is a good time sunshine fusion of soca, Jamaican ska, rocksteady on speed with a twist of trippy rock that grabs hold of the listeners wrists and launches them on to the dance-floor with a beaming smile.
