Band of the Month – February 2018 – Readers’ Choice

Well sadly that is one sixth of the year already gone – on the positive side – it is time for the Readers’ Choice for the band of the month for February.

Megalithic - Band of the month February 2018

Megalithic

From England – the rock duo Megalith.

Slowlight – Prison – Audio

The Scottish dystopian-rock quartet Slowlight released the LP The Only Thing I Want Is To Know What I Want on the 22nd.

Slowlight

Slowlight

The best way to hear the ten track album (available on bandcamp) is with blackout curtains drawn whilst hunkering in a bombshelter as by the time the roughly thirty seven minutes of songs have completed you will be fully convinced Armageddon has arrived, though rather than feeling disconsolate the mind feels refreshed, with a clear sense of purpose and perhaps most surprisingly with a sense of optimism and better able to handle the world of chaos that currently exists.

The fourth track is Prison.

Nilein – Central Park – Single Review

The Indian slofi trio Nilein revealed the song Central Park on the 25th.

This is another one of those moments when me being late to an email, on this occasion from April of last year, has borne fruit with new material, therefore an apology for not getting to older material sooner.

Central Park slips slowly in to earshot as it peers tentatively out of the speakers, minding of a dormouse wandering in to a potential spot in which to hibernate and spotting some comfortable nesting and busying itself building a bed prior to quietly resolving into slumber merely a tad over three minutes later, yet hypnotically engrossing the audience with its tentative and careful footstep though the course of the fleeting moments of its activity.

Angie McMahon – Missing Me – Single Review

The Australian gritty-blues creator Angie McMahon released the single Missing Me on the 26th.

Angie McMahon

Angie McMahon

A sumptuous vocal is joined by a scratched guitar minding of gnarly wind blowing through a plain scattering tumbleweed over dust, leading the audience to take shelter in the nearby ramshackle saloon bar only to discover they have entered the most gracious hostelry they have ever wandered in to and after an afternoon of settling in comfort with the companionship reluctantly realising they do have to depart only to retain the memory forever in their mind.

I look forward to supping more whisky in a lonely spot with a sawdust floor somewhere on the road with Angie McMahon in the future – as correctly posited – I am already missing you.

THE CATCH – Tie Dye – Single Review

The English indie-rock trio THE CATCH released the single Tie Dye on the 23rd.

THE CATCH

THE CATCH

A song (available on bandcamp) designed and executed to have you on your feet in a jiffy and join in with the infectious flow of furious guitar beat, laying against frenetic guitar and equally foot stomping bass through which a laid-back vocal takes its time to explore the narrative, giving the track a generous layer of breadth.

If one can find a section in track that is of particular joy when it is all over in less than two and a half minutes, it is when the guitar adds the effect of a xylophone (most prominently) between one minute and forty one seconds and twelve seconds later. I obiter dictum, when you catch it you will also be even more delighted.
