The English alt-rock quartet Desperate Journalist have featured regularly since their introduction in 2013.
Desperate Journalist – Good Luck – artwork
During the intervening years the music by Desperate Journalist has developed delightfully in textural depth and always highlighted by the remarkable vocal.
Perfect Health, which is the opening track of the five on their most recent EP – Good Luck – that was released on the 2nd, is a continuation of the evolution of the sound. The track calmly emerges from the speakers building layers of gently building atmosphere that finds the head encased in the silky threads. The contrast between sharply defined guitar notes against the softness of the other players, serves to highlight the voice, which drifts hypnotically around the room.
Supporting the release with a short Scotland / England tour from today until the 13th, if Desperate Journalist are playing within reach, well worth cancelling all other plans to get to see them live.
The Manic Shine, a rock band from England, are due to release the LP Trial & Triumph on the 13th of November.

Recently started an England / Scotland tour in support of the release of Trial & Triumph, the official launch will be at Camden Barfly in London.
Hold On (Together We’ll Keep Dreaming), which is the sixth of the nine tracks, opens with flourishing guitars, that set the scene to the melodic, just under four minutes progressive-rock number. The track takes a slower pace than Haze (Singing My Name), also on the album and featured back in May. For this slower more guitar driven number the music looses none of its impact as The Manic Shine pack the piece with layered melody and heavy reverb, giving Hold On (Together We’ll Keep Dreaming) a greater sense of emotional depth.
Bright & Loud is a synth-rock quartet from the USA, who will be releasing the EP In Hiding on the 15th.
Bright & Loud
Like wrapping yourself in an eiderdown duvet, Only The Angels which is the second of the four tracks on the release, finds a warming gentleness that cocoons.
Unlike as the band name would suggest Bright & Loud are able to deliver tender caresses which pucker the lips and simultaneously provide the audience with an intensity that transfixes the mind.
The drum-kit is given space to provide off-beat free-form somersaults, whilst the ten strings on the two guitars perform both rhythm and melody sections. Switching between two voices, the vocal gives context and the mesmerising keys create textures of ebb and flow, making Only The Angels, which has also been released as a single and available on bandcamp, a track that can be played on loop to discover new elements each time played through.
Tim Daisy is an experimental sound creator from the USA.
Due for release on the 7th of November through 1980 Records on a limited run of 100 cassettes is An Amusing Mess, which takes the listener on a journey of various bits and bobs becoming elements of a percussion orchestration.
An Amusing Mess is the fourth of the nine on the LP – on the ground ‘an amusing mess’ – (which is available on bandcamp) that was released earlier this year.
Night Prayer, available on Beatportas a single + two remixes is a track which has an under-laying texture of grubbiness, that is reflected in the video that features a cameraman wandering darkened streets in search of voyeuristic pleasure.
