The calming electronic folk sits in stark contrast to the chaos on the dance-floor in the video for the title track As It Comes.

Bobby Jo Valentine

There is something infectious to the music created by Bobby Jo Valentine, which despite containing every cliché that finds me normally running for the hills, I can’t help but listening track after track. It is the somewhat sardonic humour that flows through the sounds that gives the material credibility.

Pieces are well paced, neither dwelling in remorse, nor flitting along aimlessly. The compositions are straight and the delivery pretty well faultless, yet somehow you can’t help but believe there is a heart and soul to the songs. It is full credit to Bobby Jo Valentine that he is able to deliver music that whilst very easy on the ears simultaneously captivates them and it is no surprise that his fan-base extends across those with a vast swathe of style preferences.

It has taken me since May 2011 to get round to writing a review. Since the initial introduction an LP has been released, the thirteen track, Home, which takes the listener on an entertaining and engrossing forty five minute journey.

Regardless of your musical genre preference, in my view, you will find something that strikes if you allow the music to flow for a few minutes.

Rocha – Quebra Mundo – LP review

The Brazilian rage rock quartet Rocha released their six track LP Queba Mundo on the 24th December.

Rocha - Quebra Mundo

Rocha – Quebra Mundo

All over in less than twenty minutes Rocha provide sharp tracks of social commentary. Opening with the very brief Vaza which sets out the stall of Quebra Mundo with an encouraging call for cohesion amongst the disaffected and a ray of hope worth working towards.

Filosofia sets out to frame the dichotomies of the message taught and the realities of life in a searing white heat of vocal, instrument and percussion gaining coherence as the track develops over the just under three minutes.

Cinza is a tempestuous affair looking at personal relationships as the percussion is left to run riot across an even faster tempo.

The Title track offers a more conciliatory tone as Rocha open up the spaces between the notes affording the listener a slight breathing space.

Guerra De Nervos aurally does exactly what it says on the tin – The fastest track on the LP, running for two minutes fifty five seconds of interplay between the players. My pick of the release simply for the control at speed.

Concluding with Autoridade which finds Rocha in fine form as they introduce a different side to the band, a more playful and inventive streak with a track that extends for over five minutes.

Quebra Mundo is an LP to sheer away any sluggishness and is available through bandcamp.

The Seriouslys - new wave from the USA

The Seriouslys

From the cleaving the speakers asunder as the sounds fight their way out into the room, there is nothing to do other than revel in The Seriouslys. There is not an extraneous note as the energies pour out from the compositions with the notes dripping sweat as they hurtle past the ears.

Tightly woven songs are harried along by percussion, whilst the bass hammers home nail-gun lines of tape, the guitar fights bravely to find space to be heard and a staccato vocal pepper-sprays the listener with invective.

A couple of years behind them and one change to the line-up The Seriouslys is a band that makes 2013 seem even better than it has been thus far, merely knowing they exist makes life a better place and long may they continue to deliver simple, powerful, intuitive rock for the delectation of the world.

Regardless of how much I am intrigued by a wide range of music from across the world, personally there is just no place like home and The Seriouslys are most certainly home.

S/T – The Seriouslys is available on iTunes*.
