Vånna Inget - alt indie from Sweden

Vånna Inget

Driving indie rock is diffused with the surprising introduction of electronic organ, which lends a gothic feel to the sounds produced by Vånna Inget. Maintaining a forceful progression the songs are given added added texture with the keys that whirl around almost like whisps of smoke inside the tracks.

A distinctive voice makes for a defining sound to Vånna Inget as the music marches forward inside tightly laid percussion and a swooping bass is given pride of place as the lighter guitar plays a lattice to the lower registers. A new LP, their second – the eleven track Ingen Botten was released in Sweden on the 25th October and will be more broadly available on the 1st November.

I particularly enjoy the swooping architecture of the electronic organ that lends Vånna Inget a very marked space and enables the quintet the ability to discover new and engaging spaces in which to deliver the sounds that soar through the room. It is perhaps their earlier life spent in the very Lutherian / Free Church region of Småland that first gave them the idea to include this instrument, regardless of where the idea came from – it is a superb addition.

There is much to enjoy here and I look forward to hearing more of Vånna Inget in the future.

The Racer

The Racer - Rock from the USA

The Racer

Formerly known as Stuedabakerbrown, The Racer offer  a well produced and delivered rock production which is marked by smartly derived compositions that settle easily with the listener.

Having been around for a few years The Racer has developed a maturity of style, which is compounded by the stability and friendships that stretch back even longer giving the quintet the ability to produce complexity within what otherwise would be ‘another rock band’. Although they have gained traction with a loyal audience, breaking into the wider sphere is for some unapparent reason proving elusive, such are the vagaries of the music business. As regular readers know this is not a style of music that easily resonates with me, but The Racer give it an ethereal quality that provides the hook and fine musicians they are too.

I gained much out of their 2012 twelve track LP Passengers with it’s contemporary progressive rock semantics which is a delightful companion. Balancing the full use of guitars, the odd pianoforte here and there and tempering the sound to enable the five players to sit equally as intrinsic to the songs gives the music a rich tonality as the music weaves through the room.

With  a new EP scheduled in short order one can only hope the band finds a more accepting broader audience and I wish them well.

Noë

Noë from Berlin in Germany is an alt-indie band comprising – Stephan Noë (Vocals / Guitar), Anna Tsombanis (Saxophone /Key-flute), Stefan Meinking (Trumpet / Glockenspiel), Michael Büning (Double Bass) and Puya Shoary (Drums).

Noë - alt indie from Germany

Noë

You can tell by the range of instruments this isn’t your straightforward indie rock as Noë proffer an alternative more uplifting version musically as the lyrics spin around the world today, an intriguing sound to grab the ears, think Reggae on speed and you are with it.

Delightfully arranged compositions utilise all the instruments in a showering spark of light as the vocal reflects on a world in decay. There is some pleasure to be taken from the contextualisation particularly as Germanic is oft sentienced for a lack of humour, yet here we have it in a shimmering reflective, the more the music dances, the more morose the lyrics.

Never heading to the theatrical Noë are able provide a conceptual sound, which never mind the listeners grasp of German, give it a moment and it will make perfect sense for its contextualisation, this is music that portrays concept despite potential language barriers and it is always a personal pleasure when I can find bands that resonate globally when singing in their native language rather than the ubiquitous lingua franca demanding a global audience to engage not just instrumentally but linguistically, rather than just to receive.

Thanks Noë  and keep doing what you do, this is music that adds value to the world.

Galaxy 7

Galaxy 7 is the electro-rock performer Daisuke Tsutsui from Tokyo in Japan.

Galaxy 7 - electro rock from Japan

Galaxy 7

After time with a mainstream major record label signed band in 2008, he headed out on his own with Galaxy 7 which could almost be defined as metal electro. Wildly sawing guitar is met with equally frenetic electronics as Daisuke takes the audience on a sparking rumbustious journey of sound.

High energy tracks frequently extend for up to nearly seven minutes, but even then it seems too short as although there are loops of samples they are enlivened by the guitar and percussion which keeps the music moving forwards. On live performance he does use additional players, for the extensive instrumentation he performs himself on recordings, to package the show as a visual treat. As importantly on recording, without the visual entertainment there is plenty to enjoy.

The variety of ideas that Galaxy 7 deploy, give the audience more than repetitions as tracks offer different experiences and his utilisation of orchestral classicism in addition to rapidly progressing sounds gives Daisuke the ability to create solidly based compositions.

Appearing from time to time in Europe by invitation, which is a testament to the far reaching music that is Galaxy 7 and I look forward to more over the coming years.
