Pulling in a vast array of influences each track offers a new idea, from trad-jazz, through funkadelia, to bluesy yet never straying in to incomprehensibility as – although tracks can be lengthy, as is the case of my selection from the release (available on bandcamp) the seventh of the eleven Leaving, the only purely instrumental track on the album – there is a sense of direction of travel.

Smashing Birds is an indie-synth band from Belgium.

Smashing Birds

Whilst being light on texture the synths allow Smashing Birds to add layering to their output making the material ideally suited to a quiet evening gathering with friends to which the compositions add a pleasing ambience.

Not seeking to challenge the tensor tympani Smashing Birds are an outfit, nonetheless, to get to know as they are articulate and skilled musicians adept at what they do adding much to the world of music and I wish them every success.

By way of an introduction the track Time from the EP No More Revolutions, which is available on bandcamp.

The Girl Who Cried Wolf – Tin Men – Single Review

The Belgian melancholic-rock quintet The Girl Who Cried Wolf revealed their latest single Tin Men on the 20th.

The Girl Who Cried Wolf - Tin Men

The Girl Who Cried Wolf

Even on a very sunny day Tin Men would cast a shadow over the sun as the intoxicating registry of darkness cloaks the listener in hypnotic layers of synth and guitar with scattered percussion glimpsed through the room as the seductive vocal entices the listener closer to the speakers.

There are rumours that The Girl Who Cried Wolf are planning to release an LP next year, with Tin Men pencilled in as being part of the album. The only sadness is that is now only April, so until more is uncovered Tin Men will have to serve as a taster to what is in store.

Wooly Mammoths – Water Slide – Audio

The Belgian psychedelic quintet Wooly Mammoths are finalising details of an EP for possible release in May.

Whilst much is tentative about the full details one thing that is assured is that Water Slide will be on the as yet unnamed EP.

A just under four and a quarter minutes of dreamy synth and guitar combinations which even through the speakers trace a sweet smelling smokiness that slows down the synapses to a more gentle pacing. The delayed echo on vocal is deftly framed by the punctuation marks daubed by precise drums, giving Water Slide a definition by which the whole composition is able to flower, like petals gently unfurling in Spring sunlight, elegantly and gracefully, yet, with purpose.
