The last Editors’ Choice for Band Of The Month for 2015 has arrived.
Of the thousand-odd of bands who have featured this year who haven’t been selected as the Editors’ choice for band of the month, please don’t take that as a slight, there are over three hundred plus bands a day who drop a note and are looking for coverage, of those, only between three and six a day are reviewed and only one band can be ‘band of the month‘. Of the three hundred bands a day who make contact daily that I haven’t got round to reviewing, please don’t take that as an insult either. I will have heard your music and I will have sent you a response on the introduction you made to let you know why not, or that I am tracking future material. I appreciate everyone who takes the time to make the effort to create music. To the thousands of other bands who never do drop me a message, I thank you too for making the world a better place. For the many emails I haven’t got back to yet, I assure you I will – just give me some more time or a reminder, please.
The Editors Choice for band of the month for December 2015 is from Scotland – Girobabies.
Billy Roberts And The Rough Riders – Go by Myself – artwork
From the LP – Go By Myself – Who Do You Think You Are is the fifth of the eleven tracks.
Mixing together their signature Americana and rock ingredients Who Do You Think You Are is a step away from much of their material as the vocal takes a prominent half-spoken centre stage and the music is allowed to play in the background, giving the piece the feeling of a commentary set to incidental background sounds.
As part of the complete album the track makes perfect sense as throughout Go By Myself the audience is minded of following the tales of a bar-room brawler.
The Croatian alt-rock trio Media Stres release the EP E.V.I.L. (Part 2) on the 25th of January.

From the five track release Right Or Wrong, the second, is a number tht features rumbling instrumentation and reflective vocal as Media Stres follow up on the EP – E.V.I.L. (e-Virus influenced love) Part 1. released just over a year ago.
Right Or Wrong has the air of a space-rock number, which they have compressed into a pressurised airlock as Media Stres draw on closely marked chords and a pulsing percussion / bass combination to which the vocal adds the airy spaces.
The Russian synth-wave trio TIGERBERRY released a new track a couple of days ago.
Quiet The Mind flows smoothly round the ears as though on waxed skis as the slowly evolving synths envelop the mind to which the drums and guitar add body to the billowing clouds and the softly delivered vocal lulls the listener into a trance.
Why it has been approaching five years since the US dream-wave duo Bern & The Brights last featured I am unable to fathom.

Of the quartet introduced in 2011, only Bernadette Malavarca and Catherine McGowan remain, though the music is of richer texture.
Good Friday, the first of the five tracks on the EP Heart Wide Open released last month has the feeling of gossamer being wound around the room as the shortest number on the release, by almost two minutes, unfurls luxurious electronics that captivate the ears.
I will try and not leave it another half decade before I come back with another update.
